We sadly announce the passing of our father and grandfather, Michael Wai Kwong Lee, who passed away peacefully on June 2, 2025, at the age of 88.
Born in Canton, China, Michael courageously relocated to Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1954, sponsored by his parents at the age of 18. Michael was one of the first Chinese immigrants to arrive to Halifax in pursuit of a better life. After he received his Canadian Citizenship in 1957 he focused on his culinary career while his parents Gung Doo Lee and Juen Yee had their laundromat service on Barrington St. His culinary career spanned positions at the China Café, Citadel Inn, Circle J Pub, and ultimately, establishing his own restaurant, Lee Garden, in the beautiful Mahone Bay until his retirement.
Michael devoted his life to his family, consistently providing a warm home and nourishment. He was a known figure in the Chinese community for his passion for playing mahjong and was a well-known patron at the Halifax Casino. His other lifelong hobbies included fishing for bass, smelts, and mackerel every chance he could get.
Michael is preceded in death by his son Edward, with whom he will reunite. He leaves behind daughters Judy Lee (Joe Ruvo), Betty Hunt (Lindsay Hernden), and Grace Lee. In addition, five grandchildren, Ethan, Kara, Kyle, Kristopher, and Sophia, of whom he was proud and who brought smiles to his face whenever they were around.
Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude go to the nurses, doctors, and staff at Melville Lodge, whose care and support made Michael’s time comfortable.
A visitation will be held at Cruikshank’s Halifax Funeral home 2666 Windsor Street, Halifax on Thursday, June 5, 2025, from 5pm-7pm. The burial will be held the following day Friday, June 6, 2025 at 1pm in Fairview lawn Cemetery 3720 Windsor Street, Halifax.
