Our deepest sympathy to the Currie Family. It must be a great comfort and source of pride that he is remembered so fondly by friends, former students and those he taught with. He truly was a warm soul and a real gentleman and a family man. Over the years we have seen many picture of him enjoying vacations and time with his beautiful family, always with a big smile on his face. There has been such high praise for Wayne from former students, many claiming he was their favorite. It doesn't get better than that. He will live on in the memories of so many. Take Care Wayne/ Joann Shanahan

Lesley and I were out of town when Wayne's obituary was sent to us by e-mail. Tears came to our eyes as we read his obituary which captured Wayne's life qualities so perfectly. Although we knew Wayne's prognosis wasn't good , we were still totally devastated to learn of his passing. We last spoke with Wayne in early August when he visited us for three or more hours to congratulate us on a dream vacation we had won. A hug and a squeeze was always a part of Wayne's greeting followed by "a walk down memory lane."
Wayne was not just my first cousin ; he was and will always be such a dear friend and an emulated colleague when we both taught together at Holy Cross for seventeen years. Wayne was an impeccable teacher and was loved by his students and co-workers throughout his career at any place of learning he was employed .
We truly share in your sorrow and grief Amelia and family, and of course, the loss felt by all his siblings.
Rest in peace for eternity in the Kingdom of the Lord my friend!

So sorry to hear your loss of such a great man. Like many others he taught, Wayne was also one of my favourite teachers. One day at 16 years old I was driving down Pitt Street with a girl beside me. Coming to stop sign I didn’t brake in time and bumped Wayne from behind. He got out seeing the dent in his bumper said “.....Ah, don’t worry about it but does she have to be on your lap?” God Bless

To the Currie Family: so sorry for your great loss. Wayne was our son Kent's favorite teacher in high school. It was a pleasure getting reacquainted with him at one of our grandchildrens' mutual school concerts at Basinview Elementary Christmas past. He was fiercely proud of his grandchildren. Thank you, Wayne, for the impact you've had on our son and now I'm sure in some way your influence in his life is helping him with his parenting skills. May you rest in peace knowing you've made a difference in this life.

So sorry to hear of the passing of Mr Curre. He was without a doubt the best teacher that I have ever had.He was so kind and compassionate. He taught me at Holy Cross for three years. There was only one time in those three years I saw him get mad at a student. He felt so bad for yelling at us. .The next morning in English class he excused himself for a few minutes. He came back with fresh baked chocolate dip donuts from Bades bake shop for all of us.After we were finished he apologized for yelling at us.I had the pleasure of meeting him many years later when he lived on King Edward st.I was his mailman.I couldn'the believe that he still remembered my name. This was the kind of man he was.The world has lost a wonderful person. My condolences to all of the Currie family.May he rest in peace.

I had the good fortune of meeting and working with Wayne at Glace Bay High. He was a real gentleman, and always interested in people.
The loss to family and friends is great, but hopefully some comfort can be had in the fact that he was so well liked and respected.
Condolences to all.
Sincerely,

Mr Currie was one of my most favorite teachers at Glace Bay High. He taught with such a passion. I will always remember the day we were talking about what we wanted to do when we finished high school and Mr Currie walked up to my desk and said, “and this is Amanda O’Regan and one day she is going to walk into a classroom and change the way we teach forever”. I have told that story so many times because in that moment I felt capable and successful and confident. My deepest condolences to the family!

Wayne was my first cousin on my father's side. A person you could not help but look up to for guidance and direction even in his early years. My earliest memories of Wayne was his ability to come up with interesting nick names for his cousins, some have stuck with us some have not thank goodness. All in fun. I really enjoyed his visits to Ben Eoin we would sit have a beverage and listen to some old country music. He would keep asking do you have this one or that one. Such a fine gentleman will be missed by all.
My condolences go out to Amelia , Laruren, Duane , Liesl and his grandchildren. My condolences also to Wayne's siblings and their extended families . Rest in peace my friend.

Dear Amelia and ALL the Currie Family:
It is always too sad when we loose "one of the good ones".
I remember Wayne from school in GB or when we would
meet each other over the years. Always the same gentle
smile and gentle nature. My Mother was a Currie so we always
felt a family spirit..........
Our sad memories right now will soon be our precious treasurers.
Know we will keep him in our prayers.
Deepest condolences from All the Ford Family as well.

My first memory of Wayne was when I was 16 and he taught me driver’s ed. Every Saturday, Bruce Campbell and I would drive to Whitney Pier to a bakery where Wayne would pick up his bread and we would drive around the pier and back to Glace Bay. He was a beautiful person. He had an authentic quality about him that made him stand out. Of course, Jerome and I knew Wayne well from being friends with Paul. When Jerome and I would run into Wayne over the years, he would genuinely want to hear about what we were doing and we’d share a few laughs. You always walked away feeling better for having talked to him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Amelia, Duane, Lauren and Liesl and their families during this difficult time.

I had the privilege of being Wayne's next door neighbour at GBHS. We were friends who loved to share a laugh before classes and I always considered Wayne to be a real gentleman and respected teacher. I missed him when he retired. I also had the privilege of teaching both Duane and Lauren and saw the benefits they received from having such great parents. You're going to miss Wayne, I know, but be thankful that you had him in your life and cherish the memories you have of him. If I know Wayne, I'm sure that the best way to honour his memory is to live your lives as he would want you to . A man who loves his family like Wayne loved his would want them to be happy and smile when they think of him. That's how I remember him. I wish you all peace and strength.

I got to know Wayne many years ago when he subbed for me at East St. Margaret’s School and later at Tantallon Elementary. A lovely man in every way, whose love of teaching and children shone brightly every day. He will surely be missed!

Wayne was truly the milk of human kindness and a real prince among men. It was always a treat to see him with his wonderful warm smile and great big hug. He was an exceptional teacher (his daughter Laurene inherited his gift). I so enjoyed being an EPA in a class that Wayne subbed in. He used to tell the kids very entertaining stories about his school life when he was their age. He was so funny and had us all in stitches of laughter. Clearly he was the favourite sub in our school until he “retired” to help out with his grandchildren. I know that Amelia and all of Wayne’s and hers children and families have very heavy hearts right now. You also have the greatest memories and the comfort of being truly loved by a great man. Hold on to that and to each other.

Mr. Currie was my Canadian Literature teacher at GBHS. I never had a teacher who was as passionate about a subject as he was. He was a great teacher - inspiring. Years later, I would run into him in Halifax while waiting for my wife at work. It was a pleasure to chat with one of my favourite teachers in his retirement years. He was always positive and I am proud to have known Wayne Currie. My condolences to his family and for the loss of a great man!

My Uncle Wayne .... a truly lovely human who will be missed by many. He had a rare quality that I think is one of his defining traits. Wayne was genuine, really genuine , in his interactions with his friends and family. The kind of man who gave you his complete attention and made you believe he was captivated by your words as he listened. Wih a twinkle in his eye and a warm smile, he made you instantly at ease in his presence.
Amelia, Duane, Lauren and Leisel... you are in my thoughts .
Rest In Peace Wayne.

Amilia,Duane,Lauren & Leisle. There are no words to express the sadness I feel on hearing of Wayne’s passing.
You & your families are so lucky to have had such a wonderful man in your lives.
As well I feel so lucky to have had such a wonderful friend & colleague in my life.
Wayne was a true gentleman/gentle man.
When he walked into a classroom he lit up that room & when he walked into the staff room at Holy Cross School that room lit up as well.
We shared many good times, fun times & many, many ideas on how to do our best for the many wonderful students we taught & cared so much about.
Wayne was a true friend & will always have a lasting effect on staff & students who enjoyed our time with him at Holy Cross.
RIP my friend

As an educator, he reinforced my love of books and language. However, it was his love of teaching, his genuine interest in his students and the gentleness of his soul that made the greatest impression on me.
Mr. Currie, to many you were a teacher, but to me and many of your students, you were a hero. Rest well

Dear Amelia and family
It was with deep sadness and sorrow I heard of the death of my First Cousin, Wayne. Wayne's dad and my Mom were siblings. We taught together at Holy Cross School. Wayne was a 'gem' , kind, gentle, soft spoken and compassionate. May he rest in eternal peace in the presence of the Risen Lord, whom he served so very well.
My assurance of prayer for family and extended family. With love and prayer for a life well lived, S. Mary Shaw, ASC, Springfield, Illinois formerly of Glace Bay...

I just wanted to say how sorry I was to hear of Wayne’s passing. Lots of love from us in the Kanary clan. What a kind, talented man, who inspired so many of us to learn.
He was my teacher, a mentor, and a reason why I became a teacher, as well.
In the years to come, I will continue to tell stories of being in his classroom to my students, and to my colleagues of how ahead of his time he was in his craft.
Rest well, Wayne, you will be missed by many who knew you.

I'm very sorry to hear the news of Mr. Currie's passing. He was my junior high English teacher at Holy Cross School in Glace Bay, in 1978-80. He inspired me to become an English teacher, and in my first year of teaching, I was lucky enough to teach next door to him as a substitute teacher at Reserve High. He was a wonderful person. My condolences to his family.

I was so saddened by the news of Waynes passing . Amelia this must be heartbreaking for you, your family and for Wayne's siblings. My fondest memory of Wayne was that when you met up with him and he asked about anything, he truly cared about your answer . He was always so special to Mom . When he took the time out of his busy life to come and see her, his visit put a lilt in her step. During his visits, there was always something to laugh about. He was always so good to his cousin Kevin when visiting as well, Mom and I loved him for that. What a good man he was and always dressed so well. There is no doubt Wayne has gone on to a better place where there is no suffering. May your family and extended family take solace in that to get through this difficult time and get through it with Peace and love, Prayers your way. Rest Easy Wayne!

Wayne was a proud Dad that took great delight in his family, kids, grandkids and any one of us that were important to those people. Wayne welcomed my family as his family, so much so that we followed him on a couple of family vacations. He remained youthful throughout his life, taking the time to reflect on old time stories of the good old Glace Bay days. Simultaneously, he was able to keep himself modern with his impeccable sense of style. (I think he may have had some help with that). He was lucky to be surrounded by some pretty fashionable ladies. He taught us that married life could provide great benefit because you always had someone else to ask what you liked from the menu. We also had the chance to join him for many meals, meals that were always filled with stories, laughter and occasionally wine. Wayne could navigate a shopping center or coffee shop as well as anyone I know. This journey of life was made better with him in it and is a little less bright without him. Thinking of all of you.
Much Love,
Lisa, Dave and Avery

To the Dear Currie Family,
I am deeply saddened to hear of Wayne's passing on Thursday-our world has lost one of it's brightest lights.
It has been 26 years now, since I have been teaching at Tantallon Elementary School. I am proud to say that for most of this time, I have had the wonderful good luck to be teaching along side of Lauren. I can tell you that only a few people have left an indelible mark in those halls - Wayne Currie is one of them! The fact that he was never actually "on staff" but worked as a substitute teacher speaks volumes about his character, personality, kindness, generosity, and genuineness. To observe Mr. Currie interact with students, was to literally witness what education is truly all about: engaging the hearts and minds of young learners.
This rare gift was not limited to interaction with students, but, of course, with staff as well. Wayne brightened everyone's day when he walked through the doors. Always wearing a smile, he was quick to ask how you were doing (being genuinely interested in the answer!) and even quicker to steal your duty time away from you, bring tea/coffee, ask if you needed an extra prep, and on and on and on.....
The only reason staff were okay with Wayne stepping away from substituting was because of why he did so: to spend quality time with his precious grandchildren. Lucky them, and lucky him!
Amelia and family, please know that you are being thought of and loved during this heart-breaking time. I am enriched having had the opportunity to get to know Wayne. He leaves a legacy of love and kindness behind him.
Take comfort in each other,
Maureen Dunn
