Born in Halifax on February 10, 1934 to Charles Grant and Myrtle (Horne) Grant, Bill grew up in the Hydrostone neighborhood and spent his summers at the family home in Port Lorne, Annapolis County. He attended Queen Elizabeth High School and Dalhousie University before working as a surveyor and draftsman. He joined CBC radio in the early 60s and had a long career as a recording engineer and technician. He was at the controls for countless radio broadcasts and concerts, earning an Anik award for his work; a lifelong lover of classical music, he particularly enjoyed working with the Atlantic Symphony Orchestra, and was himself a drummer in dance bands and pipe bands in his youth.
He was a devoted husband to Dorothy (Metie) Grant —both members of the CBC Halifax family—almost making it to their 70th anniversary. He was the proud and loving father of Ian and David. Sadly, David passed away from adrenoleukodystrophy much too young, a loss that Bill carried with him always.
He was soft-spoken, kind, and endlessly patient. His resilience helped him overcome cancer three times, always without complaint. A skilled woodworker, he could make anything and fix anything but never thought this was anything special.
Bill’s greatest passion was sailing. The grandson of a sea captain, he was happiest when at the helm of Craigellachie (which he built himself in his driveway and named for Clan Grant’s motto) and SCaper. He loved the freedom of the open water, and would chuckle at his nervous guests when the boat heeled over in a stiff breeze. When his sailing days came to an end, he developed a keen interest in genealogy, and enthusiastically reported each newly-discovered branch of his family tree back to Charlemagne and beyond.
He is predeceased by son David. He is survived by his wife Dorothy, sister Jaqueline Porter, son Ian (Karen Prokai), and grandsons Will and Jamie, of whom he was enormously proud.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the David Grant Fund at the IWK Foundation.
