

Joseph Behling Patton, age 89, was born April 1, 1934 in Guthrie, West Virginia (near Charleston), son of Romeo Freer and Mary Augusta (Behling) Patton. He was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on April 5, 1942 when
he was eight years old. After graduating from Charleston, WV schools, he attended Brigham Young University in the fall of 1952 graduating with a Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering in June 1960.
Joseph took time off in the middle of his higher education to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From January 1956 to January 1958, he served in the Northwestern Area of the United States, which included Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. He enjoyed years of service in the church throughout his life and has been a pillar of faith to all who served with him.
While serving in the US Air Force (June 1960 - June 1963), he married Alma Ruth Ross March 31, 1962 in Manti, Utah. Joseph worked at Brunswick Corp. in Virginia for 3 ½ years (1963-1967). He moved his family back to Ohio in 1967 when he was employed by NLO/Westinghouse at the DOE Fernald site, in Ross, Ohio, where he worked for 29 years.
After he retired, Joseph volunteered at the Columbus, Ohio, Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In 2006, two years after Alma died, Joseph met Carrie Miller, who also volunteered at the temple. They were married in Columbus on October 5, 2007. For the next 13 years, they lived happily in Columbus working at the temple and enjoying their garden. Joseph grew remarkable tomatoes, which he gladly shared with all their neighbors. In 2022, because of declining health, Joseph and Carrie moved from Columbus to an assisted living facility in Greenbelt, Maryland, to be closer to Carrie’s children.
Joseph is survived by his wife, Carrie; 5 children, Douglas J. (Pam) Patton, Rebecca L. (Jeff) Weddle, John R. (Joan) Patton, Mary R. (Daniel) Daugherty, and Martha E. (Michael) Newberry. He is Grandfather to 20, Great-grandfather to 51, Great-great-grandfather to 3. He is preceded in death by his
parents, first wife Alma, 5 siblings, and 1 grandson.
He enjoyed singing, gardening, listening to classical music, reading the daily paper, doing family history, and working in the LDS temple.
Visitation will be held on Monday, January 15, 2024 from 10:00 am until Services at 11:00 am at the Rose Hill Funeral Home, 2565 Princeton Road, Hamilton, Ohio 45011.
