Joy was born September 17, 1930 as the youngest child of George David Smith and Mabel Alberta Smith (née Leach.) Raised on a fruit farm in Fruitland, Ontario, Joy graduated from Saltfleet High School and, with the school’s recommendation based on her impressive potential, went to work as an operator for a state-of-the-art billing machine at Norton Abrasives. She married Robert (Bob) Davis in 1952. Their twin children, Brian Robert and Carol Joy, were born in 1955, and the same month and year the couple founded Robert C. Davis General Insurance Agency, which they managed for 30 years as partners in business as well as marriage.
In the mid-1980s, Joy and Bob bought an acreage and built a log cabin near Montague, Prince Edward Island. They spent happy summers there for over 3 decades, with the visits by her grandchildren being a special highlight. Joy and Bob's love of that community became part of their legacy, and it remains an important place to the Davis family.
Joy was an avid organic gardener, a shrewd thrifter and recycler, and a lover of nature and animals. Post-retirement, Joy and Bob travelled the world, from Italy to Australia to Japan and many other destinations by plane and by sea. Joy also loved singing and was the longest-standing member of the Villages of Glancaster choir, and loved music, fine dining, and reading fiction of many genres. She is remembered as a woman of fierce independence and strong opinions.
After 60 years of happy marriage, Bob passed away in 2012, and Joy's final years were further blessed by her loving partnership with Tom Northcott.
Joy is survived and fondly remembered by partner Tom, her son Brian Davis (Janet) and daughter Carol Beatty (Ken), grandchildren Ian Davis (Malia), Melissa Rust (Adam), and David Beatty (Katherine), by the Davis great-grandchildren Olivia, Charlotte, Jackson, and Dante, and by many nieces and nephews.
Joy's family are ever grateful to caregivers Tammy, Teresa, Kelly, Elizabeth, Vira, Eva, and Nancy for their devoted care of Joy over the last 5 years. Their dedication and kindness was extraordinary. Joy was also very thankful for her primary care physician of 40 years, Dr. Shankardass of Dundas.
A private celebration of life will be held in the new year. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Juravinski Cancer Center or the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated.
