Our hearts are broken at the announcement of the passing of Anthony (Tony) Calleja on Monday, February 5, 2018. Founder and Operator of Calleja Roofing Inc., Tony entered his 71st year surrounded by people who cherished his wit and generosity of spirit. He is lovingly missed by his children Kattie (Andrew) and Shaun (Mia); his loving partner of many years Julie Gatt and her daughters Sharleen and Danielle Lewis. He is predeceased by his parents Caterina and Salvatore Calleja, brother Calcidon and survived by the mother of his children, Krys Calleja. With a spirit of optimism and adventure, Tony emigrated to Canada from Malta in 1966. He maintained a deep connection to his large and loving Maltese family many of whom had joined him in Canada last year for a surprise 70th birthday party. He will always be in the thoughts and prayers of his sisters Carmen, Josephine, Maria, Grace and Nelly and his brothers Father Val, OFM Cap, John and Michael, and their respective spouses and families. Tony’s adventurous spirit is passed on to a new generation of his grandchildren. Oscar, Ethan, Isabel and Angela will never forget ‘Nannu’ as the fun-loving adult who always had time for a wrestle, a pirate “Arh Matey” or a performance of his famous funny-dance. Tony valued strong friendship. Whether winning money from the boys at his monthly poker-night, exploring that city that never sleeps or shaking it at the Maltese Dance, Tony found time to truly live life to the fullest. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Father Mark and Father Charles for their visits, prayers and spiritual guidance and to the doctors, their medical staff and the Juravinski Ward C3 staff for their compassion and care. At Tony’s request cremation has taken place. A warm invitation is extended to friends to celebrate Tony’s extraordinary spirit at the MARKEY-DERMODY FUNERAL HOME, 1774 King Street East (at Kenilworth) on Friday, February 9 from 2-4pm and 7-9pm. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated at OUR LADY OF LOURDES CHURCH, 416 Mohawk Road East (East of Upper Wentworth) on Saturday, February 10th at 9:00 a.m. As an expression of sympathy donations to the Juravinski Cancer Centre would be appreciated. Tony will always be remembered as generous, funny and kind. He enriched our lives every-day. Tony, that smile of yours will always be with us.
