Peter Joseph Potichnyj, 96, passed away at home on June 3, 2026; he entered the world the eldest of triplet brothers on June 2, 1930. He is predeceased by his parents, Petro and Oleksandra, and his youngest brother, Wolodymyr. He is survived by his younger brother, Andrij. Peter is also survived by his wife of 69 years, Tamara, and their children Eugene and Adriana along with their spouses and grandchildren.
A celebrated Professor Emeritus at McMaster University’s Department of Political Science, Peter’s scholarship and guidance ensures his memory lives on in countless students, colleagues, friends, activists, and writings around the world. His life’s work was dedicated to seeing a free and independent Ukraine.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to everyone whose care enabled Peter to pass on his terms.
Visitation will be held at Markey-Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street E, Hamilton, on Monday, June 8 from 5-7 p.m. with Panachyda at 7 p.m. Funeral Service will take place at Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Church, 15 St. Olga Street, Hamilton, on Tuesday, June 9 at 11 a.m. Cremation to follow.
