Ed was born in 1940 in Port Aux Basque NFLD. Shortly after the war the family relocated to Sydney, Cape Breton Island NS. Upon graduating the Sydney Academy, Ed like many others of his generation joined the diaspora of eastern Canadians who were relocating to western Canada in search of employment and opportunities. This brought Ed to Galt Ontario where he started a family and worked full-time while getting his degree from the University of Waterloo. By the time he was 30 he was the father of five children and had started a life long career passionately dedicated to the Canadian Labour movement. A movement he worked to sustain well into his seventies. In 1968, Ed ran for the NDP in Fergus On under the leadership of Tommy Douglas, the father of Canadian Medicare. Ed worked with many stalwarts in the labour movement including Caesar Chavez, Stephen Lewis and Ed Broadbent, not to mention his close friends like Bill Howes, Fred Pomeroy and Monte Davidson to name a few.
Ed was an accomplished labour historian writing books on the history of organizations such as the Carpenters and Electrical workers unions. His extensive collection of labour history photographs are held by McMaster University in their archives. Ed continued to be a prolific writer and researcher right up until the end. He had a particular passion for knowing everything he could about the heinous genocide and colonialism of Canada's Indigenous People's and the importance of Truth and Reconciliation. He was a true social justice warrior who believed in equality and justice in all things.
With heartfelt and deepest appreciation, we would like to thank everyone who cared for Ed at St. Joseph's Hospital. Their compassion and excellent care will always be remembered.
