Gail Elizabeth Gibbons

It is with heavy and hurting hearts that we announce the passing of Gail Elizabeth (Harrod) Gibbons, 53, of Hamilton, Ontario. Gail died at Emmanuel House Hospice in Hamilton on September 3, 2026, surrounded by her family.

Gail was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on April 27, 1973.

Gail is survived by her parents, Karen Hyatt (Wayne) and Ron Harrod (Johanna); her daughters, Jordan Gibbons and Sydney Hamel (Ethan); and her brother, Mike Harrod (Theresa).

Eight years ago, Gail was diagnosed with a rare gastric cancer. At the time, doctors gave her five years to live. She said she was determined that she would not sit around waiting to die.

After her initial diagnosis, she got a tattoo on her arm that read, "Defy the Hand You're Dealt." She spent the next eight years defying the odds every day.

She loved glamping in her motorhome, which she named Tripp. She travelled with Tripp as far as Newfoundland. Many enjoyable times were spent at campgrounds with old friends and new ones she made along the way.

She travelled to Panama numerous times to spend time with her mother and stepfather during the winters. She loved spending hours at a time floating around in the pool, gazing at the surroundings and the blue sky.

She went on road trips with her daughters, her mother, and friends.

Gail was a lifelong lover of animals. She had many cats and dogs and had a soft spot for any furry creature. She treated each one like a valued member of the family.

She always had a smile and a laugh, even when she was in constant pain. She didn't want her situation to bring other people down. Many people didn't realize how ill she was until the very end.

Gail had many close friends whom she cherished, and they in turn knew what a special person she was.

Gail's relationship with her daughters was exceptional. She built a foundation of unconditional love and support. Her daughters were her best friends, and they always knew that no matter how big or small the problem, she was always there for them.

Gail fought valiantly, finally succumbing to her cancer after more than eight years.

Gail will be remembered as a caring and thoughtful person. Someone who always saw the positive side of things. Someone who had a smile and a laugh that could light up a room. A daughter, a mother, a friend.

Visitation at Markey-Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street East, on Sunday, September 6, 2026 from 2 pm- 6pm.Funeral service will be held at Markey-Dermody Funeral Home on Monday, September 7, 2026 at 11 am. Cremation to follow.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Emmanuel House Hospice.
