Peacefully passed away in his 95th year on May 16, 2018 at Macassa Lodge in Hamilton, Ontario. His loving, joyful spirit will be missed by his wife Brigita (nee Marton) of 67 years and his children Linda Morrison (Allen), Sandra Desrochers (Peter Clarey), Richard Szobolics and Wendy DiTomaso (Ralph).
Cherished grandfather to Danielle, Lee, Steven, Chantal and Braden. Dear brother of Victoria Wilson and the late Eva Hummell, and brother-in-law to Elizabeth Williams and John and Bruncha Marton. He is remembered fondly by nieces, nephews and generations of friends who admired him. George was born in Tiszadob, Hungary in 1923 and immigrated to Canada with his family as a young child. After secondary school in Hamilton, he joined the Canadian Armed Forces as a member of 9th Field Squadron R.C.E, taking him overseas to serve in WW II. In Holland he was wounded in action by an enemy buzz bomb, but that did not stifle his quest for adventure once he returned to civilian life. The tales of his road trip, to the depths of Mexico in a 1929 Model A Ford, are legendary. George married Brigita in Hamilton and worked as a machinist with Brown Boggs, later moving to Beamsville Ontario where they raised their four children. He began his career as a Real Estate Broker while operating their hobby fruit farm. George enjoyed athletic pursuits such as boxing, judo, bodybuilding, marathon running, cycling and kayaking. He was an avid reader and philosopher with a sharp wit and infectious sense of humour. He was happiest surrounded by family and friends and always had a smile, a hug and a story. Family and friends are invited to gather for a Celebration of George’s Life on Saturday, June 16, 1 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion – Branch 163, 435 Limeridge Road East (access via Kingfisher Drive), Hamilton.
