February 17, 1953 - May 21, 2026
It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Giedra Szpiech at her home on Thursday, May 21, 2026 at the age of 73.
Beloved and devoted wife of 49 years to Henry Szpiech, who was not only her husband but also her best friend and constant companion. Giedra was Henry's trusted sounding board through every stage of her life, and together they were joyfully planning the celebration of their upcoming 50th wedding anniversary. Loving and supportive mother of Laura Figliola (Joseph), and Michael Szpiech, who always knew they could count on their Mom for advice, answers to life's problems or simply a listening ear. Cherished and adored Grandma to Julia and Noah, whose hugs, giggles, and countless afternoons swimming in the backyard, brought her endless joy.
Giedra will be deeply missed by her brother Gedas P. Breichmanas and his wife Irene, and by her brother-in-law Ted Szpiech and his wife Jeannette. She was a loving aunt to Andrew Breichmanas (Frances) and Danielle Simmons (Eric), and her great-nieces and great-nephew. Predeceased by her beloved parents, Genovaite and Petras Breichmanas.
Giedra dedicated many years of service to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, where she found particular fulfillment supporting individuals affected by noise-induced hearing loss.
A woman of many talents and passions, Giedra possessed a love of music and had a beautiful singing voice. She was a gifted artist, and had an extraordinary green thumb. She spent many years dancing with the Lithuanian folk group Gyvataras under the direction of her mother. Dancing with Gyvataras offered Giedra the opportunity to travel extensively across Canada. This nurtured a lifelong love of travel that took her and Henry to many destinations across North America and Europe.
Giedra was known for her compassionate heart, fiery spirit (in the best way), mischievous sense of humour and unwavering support for others. With Giedra, no one ever cried alone. In her final years, she became her grandchildren's biggest fan, proudly attending countless cross-country meets, basketball, soccer, and volleyball games. Some of her happiest moments were spent in the backyard with Julia and Noah, who lovingly teased her about her cherished begonias.
Though our hearts are broken as we grieve this tremendous loss, we are forever grateful and blessed to have loved her.
The family will receive relatives and friends at the Markey-Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street East, Hamilton, on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. and 6:00-8:00 p.m. The family will honour her memory with a private service at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations in Giedra's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
