March 28, 1938 – January 5, 2026
It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved husband and father, John, surrounded by the love of his family on Monday, January 5, 2026 in his 88th year after a difficult journey with COPD and lung cancer.
Predeceased by his parents Peter and Antonia Alevras, as well as by his sister Maria Kreokouke.
He will be deeply missed by his beloved wife, Maria with whom they shared 61 wonderful years together. Dedicated and loving father to Antonia “Toni” Cummings (Patrick) and Peter Alevras (Lisa). He was the proudest papou to his grandchildren Sophia (Seung Yeob), Christian and Yanni, and to his great-grandchildren Hoon and Min. He will be missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends in Canada and Greece.
John was co-owner of a Glass Smith shop in Piraeus, Greece, prior to coming to Canada. He immigrated to Canada in 1975 with his wife and children. He set up roots in Hamilton, where he worked as a Steel Worker and Welder at Universal Handling Equipment. John had a love of all things sports, the outdoors, fishing, and a good walk on the beach with a cup of coffee in hand. Many years were spent with his family in Wasaga beach, a place where he found much enjoyment. John was easy-going, with a great sense of humour and a love of books and knowledge, with keen attention to world history and geography. Above all else, he loved his family. We will miss him terribly and remember him in the small moments of our days.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 11, 2026 at Markey Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street E., Hamilton from 2-6 PM. Panachyda will be offered at 3PM. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Panagia Greek Orthodox Church, 233 E15th St., Hamilton, on Monday, January 12, 2026 at 10:00 AM. Burial to follow at Woodland Cemetery, Burlington.
Donations to Panagia Greek Orthodox Church would be greatly appreciated by the family.
