It is with deep sorrow that the family of Jeff Gardner announces his passing on December 27, 2024 at Bob Kemp Hospice with his family by his side. He was a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and friend who touched the lives of many with his kindness. Jeff will be missed immensely by his wife of 24 years Tanis (nee Tetley) and his sons Colin and Chad. Jeff is predeceased by his parents, and will be missed by his siblings, Tanis’s family and his many nieces and nephews.
Jeff showed his love to his family by spending time together in nature. His family will forever cherish their memories of family trips, long drives, nature walks, cottage weekends, backyard bonfires and barbecues. Family time included game nights, movie nights and talks on the couch. Jeff was always at the ready to drive the boys to their activities or anywhere they needed to go. His family will miss his presence in his chair in the living room. Jeff found peace during his illness sitting in the backyard watching the birds and animals and on Lake Erie beaches.
Jeff taught Mathematics for over 34 years, most recently at Mohawk College and previously at Sherwood Secondary, Churchill Secondary, Bowmanville Secondary and Hillfield Strathallan College. Jeff had a passion for teaching and was loved by his students. He had an uncanny way to understand his students’ challenges and to inspire them to be the best they could be. His door was open for math students and those who needed a safe place to hang out at lunch. Jeff did not put up with bullying of students or staff as he had zero tolerance for bullying. He shared his vast knowledge and materials with all math staff to better the department. He coached the school swim teams, was active on various OSSTF committees and took part in the Fields Institute’s Centre for Mathematics Education Forums. Jeff took all of those skills into his social life, enjoying both learning and sharing through conversations and debates.
As a young man Jeff loved adventure including: traveling, race car driving, motorcycle riding and long distance cycling. He loved playing water polo, lifeguarding, taking scuba lessons and getting his light aircraft pilots license. Jeff studied various martial arts and he found his joy in Aikido and the people he met through his exploration of the arts.
Jeff’s kindness, generosity and fun-loving sense of humour will be remembered by all who knew him.
For those who would like to come and share their stories with Tanis, Colin and Chad we will be gathering to celebrate Jeff’s life on Saturday, January 4th at the Dundas Granite Curling Club, 24 Head Street, from 2:00 – 5:00 PM. Dress in casual attire. Family, friends, colleagues and past students are welcome.
The family would like to thank the staff at Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice for their loving care of Jeff and his family during his stay. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Bob Kemp Hospice in Hamilton. Cremation has taken place. Online tributes and condolences may be made at www.cresmountfennellchapel.com
