Born to Ella (O'Neill) and William Conrod in Halifax, NS, Joan is survived by her husband Hugh, their children Patricia (Seaman), Paul (m. Sandra), Michael (m. Crystal), and grandchildren Michael, Madalynn, David, Joshua and Nina, and her sister Mary (McBride). She was predeceased by her parents and brothers William (Bonita), Raymond (Mary), and John (Brenda).
Joan was devoted to her family and to God. Anyone who met or knew her will speak of her kindness, generosity and sense of humour. Her religion was always an important part of her life. So much so that, in 1958 she entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Halifax as a novitiate (Sister Ellen Margaret). She held lasting memories of the wonderful times and peacefulness from those years before she decided she was needed more outside the community, officially withdrawing in 1964. Joan was a much-loved teacher for many years (Halifax, Lunenburg County, Summerside) and also was very active in the CWL, Cursillo and other groups and ministries in the Catholic church throughout her life. A member of the St. Thomas Aquinas club in Halifax, Joan met Hugh there and they married in 1968. No matter where her path took her across Nova Scotia, PEI and Ontario, she always made lasting friendships.
The visitation will be held on Friday, Nov 11 from 5-8pm at Cresmount Funeral Home (322 Fennell Ave East, Hamilton, ON L9A 1T2). A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, Nov 12 at 2pm at St. Charles Garnier Catholic Church (129 Hughson St S, Hamilton ON L8N 2B3). Donations to Parkinson Canada may be made in lieu of flowers.
