I had the pleasure of having Dr Gately as my first Clinical Skills Tutor, so many years ago. The wisdom he imparted on me, has stayed to this day........ I can still hear his encouraging voice saying; " ..............

I had the privilege of knowing John since 1989, when I came to McMaster for a Fellowship. At that time, he was both colleague and mentor. He regarded himself as a conservative surgeon;  "Primum non nocere", or "first, do no harm" was his guiding principle and sure enough, he would often admit and observe his patients when others might have intervened. But his care was no less good; in fact, he would monitor and review his patients regularly, discuss and share his thoughts to ensure that he and his patients stayed on the right track. I lost touch with John when I left McMaster in 2006, although I had heard of his illness
The next time we met early this year our relationship was very different. I was the interventional radiologist on duty when he was admitted to Joseph Brant Hospital. It was the greatest honor to be his physician and to care for such an amazing man. A true gentleman who made light of his illness as another might of the weather. He was stoic; never complaining. If there was an issue to address, he would analyze and discuss options in such a matter-of-fact way that the path ahead was crystal clear. He was an effortless patient to care for; loved by the nurses; admired by the X-Ray staff and deeply respected by the doctors. 
For me this was such a bitter-sweet experience. Understandably bitter given his illness, but sweet in that John focused on nurturing our friendship, even at this late stage in his life. How grateful I was for that! So many common experience to share, from Cambridge, as physicians as ex-patriots of the UK to name a few.
John would extol the qualities of his children, of their achievements and for the huge part that they had played in his life. His deep admiration and love for Marie was more than apparent; his heart warmed by her unconditional care and commitment to him throughout his illness.

I had the pleasure of knowing and working with Dr John Gately for over ten years.  He was a charming, sweet individual whose smile was infectious.  He earned the respect of so many patients, families and collegues over the years.  I always looked forward to seeing him at work.  He was a huge supporter of nurses and I admire how many times he went to bat for us and for his patients.  He will be truely missed by so many and I will cherish all my memories of him close to my heart.  I wish I could be there Friday to honour him but it is with regret that I can not.  My heart goes out to the family and friends of our dear John.

Tell me what you would tell a favourite aunt I said !
   He told me ---that's what we did  and I am here 17years later !1
