

On August 31, 2024, we lost John Giftopoulos suddenly and far too soon. Beloved husband to Mena, devoted father to Brandon, and the cherished son of Eleni and the late Paul. Brother to Steve (Janis), Mike (Nicole), Peter and Maria. He will be deeply missed by his extended family, including his nieces and nephews. John’s beloved puppy, Koda Bear, whom he adored, will miss him dearly.
John was a wonderful husband and father who always took care of his loved ones. John was a talented carpenter. His craftsmanship was both innovative and consistently excellent. He took great pride in his work and always ensured every project was completed with care. He could turn a few pieces of wood into a structure of gold. John thrived on sharing his skills and passions with his son, Brandon, whether it was woodworking, cooking, or cheering on the Toronto Raptors together. He cherished every moment spent teaching Brandon and watching him grow.
John devoted his career as an Engineering Technologist to the City of Oakville, before transferring to Guelph, where he continued to work diligently, making a significant impact. He was known for his innovative solutions and dedication to improving community infrastructure. He took immense pride in his work and was always ready to lend a hand at a moment’s notice, whether it was for colleagues, family or anyone in need. No matter the challenge or problem, he faced everything with unwavering resilience and never complained, always maintaining a positive outlook. His legacy of strength and positivity will continue to inspire all who knew him. John’s work continues to benefit the community, with his spirit and dedication always remembered.
In his younger days, he graced the ice as a professional hockey player for numerous teams worldwide, including the NHL Winnipeg Jets’ affiliate team the Kalamazoo Wings, where he frequently earned the title, player of the game. He was also a soccer player, earning numerous recognitions and awards from both his soccer and hockey careers. John treasured the moments spent watching the Blue Jays, but especially the Toronto Maple Leafs with his beloved mother.
John’s kindness, dedication, and love for his family as well as his community will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His kindness, strength, and unwavering positivity left a lasting impact on our hearts. As we say goodbye, we hold onto the cherished memories and the love he shared so generously. The compassion and generosity he embodied will remain a guiding light for us every day. May we find comfort in knowing that his spirit lives on in the lives he touched and the love he spread.
