Rev John Tobey was a great man of God. I am so blessed to have known him. I like to add to this what many Jewish people say at a great man's passing. "May his memory be for a blessing." Amen.

Dr. John Wesley Tobey was my most favorite teacher at CCC.   Often times he would make up names for his students and he named me after the book of Zephaniah thus instead of Stephanie he would call me Stephaniah 3:17.  I loved my new name.   

Two years ago we celebrated my husband Keith's 75th. birthday and my husband's wish for his birthday was to renew our marriage vows.  I asked Dr. Tobey if he could  do this kind deed for us and eventhough he was still recouperating from heart surgery it was ofcourse without hesitation a resounding "Yes".   Everybody present that day thought it was just beautifully done the way Dr.Tobey lovingly lead us into repeating our vows.   

Two weeks before his passing we had chicken dinner with Dr.Tobey and Ann but before we had our meal we asked Dr.Tobey if we could have communion toghether.  And ofcourse again a resounding "Yes".   Although he was weak he broke bread and shared the cup with us.   Sooo special.  

Yes, Dr. John Wesley Tobey was a VERY SPECIAL MAN OF GOD.  We are indeed blessed to have had him as our dear friend as well.     
There is one phrase for Dr.Tobey:  The Love Of God was evident in his smile for everyone.   Romans 12:9-18. 

We will miss you Dr.Tobey on this side of heaven but we know that you are REJOICING right now in the presence of your beloved Lord, Jesus Christ as you in turn receive your new "heavenly" name.

I moved to hamilton in 1987 to go to Mohawk college and it was then that I met the tibey family.  I lived with them while I went to college.

This whole family was amazing an d it is no wonder with an amazing man like mr. Tobey at the spiritual head of  this family.  Mr. Tobey was so full of the spirit and had so much love for his God.  

He  was loving to all who met him, funny to all who were fortunate enough to have talked to him and spend time with him.  He always had a positive spin on everything and a smile to go along with it.  The tobeys were my family away from home and always had a special place in my heart and always will.  

Mr. Tobey was the most selfless man I have ever met and I know he is in the arms of Jesus celebrating his love.  

Rip mr. Tobey, you were loved on earth and now you will be loved in your heavenly home.  You will always be loved and remembered.

Pastor Niles and I were privileged to have shared The Lord's Supper a very short time before he went Home. We discussed Randy Alcorn's book entitled Heaven. His comment was how much he was looking forward to being there. The smile on his face was truly heavenly. We sorrow not as those who have no hope but rejoice in the Abundant Entrance that  Peter refers to  in  2 Peter 1:11.

I remember the first time I met your dad, he had a big smile and was so happy to meet me and so glad I came over. He was like that every time I did. Always joking around and always doing his best to make me feel like I was a part of the family. 
I'm truely very sorry for your loss. 
I know you all have such wonderful memories that will help you during this time.

We will always remember him in a most warm and fond way as the man of God that he was and continues to be in eternity. "Yes", says the Spirit, "that they may rest from their labors, and their works follow them."  for we do not sorrow as others who have no hope. 1 Thes. 4:13.  The Lord Himself shall be your strength. So yesterday we said farewell to an amazing man of God, my dad.  The Celebration of Life was uplifting and joyful as we honoured Rev. Dr. John Wesley Tobey and the Lord for His blessings to us. It is truly an answer to prayer how everything came together the last two weeks, from gathering and singing at dad's bedside, and being present when he took his final breath on earth and stepped into eternity with our Saviour, to the rain holding off and the heat and humidity was gone for the internment, as mom would have struggled in that climate. It was amazing how the Lord prompted Cindy to open her home (outdoors) for our large family to gather to grieve together and share a meal she prepared for us.  I kept looking around for dad.  He would have loved it. I'm sure he was dancing in heaven when we sang his beloved hymns like Victory in Jesus. He would have shied away as Dr. Charles McVety expressed how dad was a loyal Christian and humble, ordaining 6000 pastors, teachers and evangelists in his 46 years with Canada Christian College. Or how my cousin Pastor Troy Tobey proclaimed that "we are more than conquerors" as was dad's graduating Bible college class theme verse.  Uncle Bill, Judy Tobey-Methner and Ruth Canning-Biss all explained how dad was so important in our lives. They were amazing.  We will never know till we reach eternity, how many lives were touched by one life.  So dad, we Celebrate you!  We will miss you so much! Love you forever, we'll see you in heaven!

It is with much sadness that we as a family wish to announce the passing of our loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandpa, John Wesley Tobey, at the age of 83. He went on to be with his Lord and Saviour, August 21, 2020, at 2:36am, in his home surrounded by those he loved.
John was a humble servant who dedicated his life to being the hands and feet of Jesus putting others before himself. He was a genuine man who will be remembered and missed by many.

A kind, gentle spirit with a heart of gold and loyal to the end.
An accomplished biblical scholar, with an M.Div from UofT, Th.D. CCC, Professor of Greek and Systematic Theology.
Everyone who knew Doc was blessed to spend time with him.
Dr. Tobey is now hearing the Lord say, well done good and faithful servant, you have run your race, finished the course, now is the time for your reward.


We will miss you Dr. Tobey. Your reward is great in heaven today! Everyone that had the pleasure of knowing you, loved you. I have never met a more humble, gentle and kind soul. 
You loved the Lord and served Him well. Canada Christian College was better because of your presence and Charles McVety and myself loved serving God with you. Farewell for now dear one, but not forever!
My heart goes out to his lovely wife Ann and his precious family. Praying for God’s strength and peace to face the days ahead 

God sends vey special people into our lives from time to time. John and Ann Tobey and their little girls were special to us during  John's pastorate at the Smooth Rock Falls United Church. Ron Paquette was my husband then and our 3 boys got along well with the Tobey girls!!!Our families became very close during the two years we were there and continued to be until we lost track of each other. Thankfully we found each other again recently through the girls and FB!! My heart goes out to Ann and the girls and the rest of the Tobey clan as John will be sorely missed by them all!! He was one of God's special and faithful servants💕🙏🏼💕


Dear Aunt Ann and daughters and families, my deepest condolences for the loss of Uncle John. What a blessing we have had of these brothers in our lives that are such wonderful spouses and fathers. Uncle John and your family seemed to always arrive late to our reunions, and always seemed to have an exciting and different vehicle (or bus, the most exciting!), wearing suspenders and a farm hat and coming with a pleasant mood and a chuckle or three.

My prayers are with you Ann and all the family. Sorry for your loss. His faith was strong and he devoted his life to God. His faith endured him throughout lives struggles. I met John and Ann when I became Jason’s ,s respite nurse and was excepted as part of  the family . Knowing Elizabeth and Rob and their boys was humbling and fun. I could see the love and respect the family had for each other. Having a special needs child was a test of their strength and love. I always saw Jason happy and laughing.
It seemed to me John and Ann never had much financially but he always seemed to provide for his family and others. Their riches were their faith, love, and family.

My earliest memory of John and Ann Tobey goes back to the early 1980's when I was still dating my wife Annie. We would hangout with the young people at the large Tobey house on Fennel Ave near Upper Sherman. Those were fun times. The Tobeys always had their  home as well as their hearts opened to Hamilton's youth.

My memory of Mr Toby was as a youth many many years ago . Before seatbelts he had long bench seats in his van and us youth would pile in to go to whatever adventure we were taking . If we ran out of room on the seats we would sit on the floor. Their was always much singing and laughter . And the big house on that hill ! Great time and great memories ! Till we meet again Mr Tobey, ❤️ 

A Beautiful man with much Wisdom and encouraged many into the work of the Lord . Helped us much into getting into becoming God's  servants on the road helping Truckers . Much Blessing to the Family and encouragement they also do in giving back. God Bless You All. 

I was sad to hear of the loss of John but also glad to know he is with his Lord & Savior Jesus and that we will meet again some day soon. I will never forget the day John baptized me in the lake so many years ago, a wonderful day indeed. Thoughts & many prayers for much comfort for family during this time.

Mr. Tobey was one of the nicest people I ever met, always pleasant and interesting!   You could talk any topic and Mr. Tobey was well versed to speak to it.  Rest in peace Mr. Tobey!

I remember the bus you all had and Steve and Dan Cowan  and I think John (my brother)went to a festival at the Cayuga Speedway to witness for the Lord.
God definitely showed them favor, but it was because of your dad’s bus. 
Your dad is now enjoying time in heaven with my dad and mom (John and Martha Edelman), remembering all the good times! Your family is in our prayers!

I have known John and the Tobeys for over 40 years and have grown to love and respect them all greatly. In earlier years I have had the privilege of serving in worship with this awesome and beautiful   family. My prayers are with you all.

I remember the first time I wandered through John and Ann’s Christian Retreat at the farm many years ago with Elizabeth. I was overwhelmed by the quiet strength of Dr John Tobey.  He created an atmosphere of acceptance and peace and healing for any and all that entered. So much was accomplished at this Retreat and yet John was almost shy in his acceptance of any praise. There were many times of celebrating family milestones In the atmosphere of the Retreat also. So much love and laughter!  
John left a legacy for his family.......a legacy of love, kindness, giving, caring, sharing with those in need, and the list goes on with the most important of all.....receiving Christ as Saviour!  This very kind, gentle servant used every means possible to share Christ and only Heaven will reveal the outcome.  Mac will miss those stimulating conversations with John on Sundays at BGT. 
We pray peace and comfort over dear Ann and the entire family.
