1942 - 2025
Juraj ‘George’ Marinic of Hamilton, who began his life in Zagreb, Croatia on January 14, 1942, and continued it in Canada where he relocated in 1969, passed away peacefully with family at home on Tuesday November 18.
Juraj dedicated 10 years as a land surveyor for a geological research company in the former Yugoslavia. After immigrating to Canada, he worked for another 38 years, eventually retiring at age 65 from his job constructing large industrial transformers for General Electric. His time as a land surveyor allowed him to travel throughout Yugoslavia, and it was on one of these surveying trips in Slovenia where he met Nadia, who would become his wife.
Married in 1966, Juraj and Nadia spent the following 59 years building a life together. In 1969, Juraj and Nadia, with their first two children, Zvonimir and Patricia, made the difficult decision to immigrate to Canada where they welcomed two more children, Alexandra and Erik. Together they built a loving home filled with music and noise and road trips, and an unforgettable ‘European Vacation’.
Juraj was dealt some difficult health challenges in life, but he met them all with quiet grace and strength. He will be remembered for his easy-going nature, his generous spirit, his passion for taking care of his family, his magical piano playing and watching sports of any and all kinds, especially the Toronto Blue Jays for which he was a devoted fan. He was a member of Slovenski Park and St. Gregory the Great Church and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
Juraj is survived by his wife Nadia, his children Zvonimir (Angelina), Patricia (Rob), Alexandra (Mike) and Erik (Tiia), and his cherished grandchildren, Martin, Elin, Rhiannon, Samuel and Aaron. He was preceded in death by his parents Mihael and Zdenka Marinic and his brother Josip.
A private family service to take place. A Celebration of Life will be held between 4:00 – 6:00 pm on Friday November 28 at Markey-Dermody Funeral Home at 1774 King St E in Hamilton. All are welcome to attend the celebration of Juraj’s life and memories.
