She was born in London, Ontario on May 24th, 1933 the daughter of Regina Hines (nee Shildrick). She married Arnold Edward Abbott and had one daughter, Kimberley Jordanna who survives her.
MariLynne was formidable woman. Armed with with street smarts and a grade six education, she became a business woman who worked at the credit bureau, Canada Permanent Trust and was part of the team that brought MasterCard to Canada. She was also part of the second wave of feminism in Canada fighting for women to get equal pay for work of equal value. At 48 years of age she had her first stroke, the result of an aneurism in the brain. She later moved from Toronto to Vancouver where she was part of the Federal government’s Senior’s Advisory Council and set up and managed a charity called WISHS - building housing in Vancouver for low income women. Her second stroke came 5 years ago and she remained at Purdy long term care facility part of VGH. Her daughter moved her back to Ontario a month ago into a long term care home in Burlington and was by her side when she passed away in Joseph Brant Hospital.
She was 86.
