Mato was born in Gorićan, Međimurje, Croatia. In 1958, he immigrated to Canada via Austria. At 20 years old, his life in Canada started in Vancouver and Prince George, B.C. working on farms, pulp mills and the railroad. Convinced by a friend, he came to Ontario and worked for a Croatian-owned stone quarry in Acton. He found permanent work in Galt, Ontario before establishing his permanent roots in Hamilton, where he married his wife Ana and started his family.
Mato was a kind, generous and courageous person with an unwavering faith in God. He found comfort in daily prayer, spending time with family and friends and going to mass regularly at Holy Cross Croatian Parish.
Mato had a passion for classic cars, wine making and tending to his fruit and vegetable garden. He enjoyed watching soccer (Vatreni) and his favourite TV shows Three's Company and The Price is Right.
We would like to thank the caregivers from Bayshore and the nurses from St. Joseph's Homecare for their compassionate care.
