Who passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025, at Hamilton General Hospital after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease and pneumonia. Born on March 9, 1952, in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, to Cornelius and Ethline Powell, Papslyn later immigrated to Canada, where he built a life grounded in hard work, deep family values, and a love for life’s simple pleasures.
He was the beloved husband of the late Joy Elaine (Calda) Powell, and a devoted father to Dwayne, Tristan, and Jessica. He was a proud grandfather to Jasmin, Ethan and Gemma.
Papslyn was a hardworking and dedicated employee who gave many years of service to Stelco, National Steel Car, the Hamilton Street Railway (HSR), and MTD in Kitchener. Wherever he worked, he was known for his reliability, strong work ethic, and deep knowledge—a man others naturally turned to for help and guidance.
He was a man of many interests and hobbies. He loved gardening, reading, singing, and listening to music. He enjoyed long walks, watching the news and The Weather Network, and never missed an episode of The Big Bang Theory. He had a deep love for sports, regularly played the lottery, and enjoyed attending festivals. He also had a cherished coin collection and found great joy in attending church. A loyal reader of the Hamilton Spectator, he also had a fondness for Tim Hortons coffee and a good meal at The Keg.
Papslyn was a cherished brother to Kathleen, Chilton, George, Beverly, and Jacyl, and was predeceased by his brothers Charles and Gabriel, and his sister Susan.
He was a beloved uncle to a large and loving family: Patricia (predeceased), Sharon, Pamella, Joan, Jackie, Clifford, Marcia, David, Kevin, Wendy, Michelle, Karen, Roger, Dian, Dave, Conrod, Earle, Tammy (predeceased), Lisa, Rochelle, Sasha, Tony, Trudy-Ann, Princess, Tanika, Raquel, George Jr., Katherine, Shanique, Dennis (DJ) (predeceased), Chelan, Oren, Omarr, and Zayde—as well as dozens of great-grand nieces and nephews. Known affectionately as “Uncle Pops,” he was deeply loved and admired by all generations of his extended family.
Papslyn’s warmth, humor, wisdom, and gentle presence will be remembered always. His ability to light up a room, share meaningful conversations, and offer quiet strength made him someone truly special. He will be missed deeply by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Visitation will take place at Cresmount Funeral Home, 322 Fennell Avenue East, on Sunday, June 22, 2025, from 2–4 p.m. and 7–9 p.m.
Funeral Service will be held on Monday, June 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel, with visitation beginning at 10:00 a.m., followed by interment at Mount Hamilton Cemetery.
The Powell family would like to express their heartfelt thanks for the love, support, kind words, and encouragement received during this difficult time.
