Peter was born on December 8, 1954, in Brantford, Ontario, to John and Bertha Hughes, who predeceased him. Although he spent his later years in Wallaceburg, Peter spent most of his life in Hamilton, Ontario, where he built his career, raised his family, and formed many lifelong friendships.
For 45 years, Peter shared a marriage with his beloved wife, Freda Hughes. Together they built a family that became the center of his world. He is survived by his wife, Freda; his son, Nathan Hughes and wife Megan, and their children, Leon and Daphne; and his daughter, Nicole Hughes and husband Chris, and their children, Lucas and Theo. He is also survived by his siblings, Bill, Bob, Jim, and Mary.
Peter took tremendous pride in his work and the relationships he built throughout his career. He was known for his love of work, valued friendship, and enjoyed the company of the many friends he made throughout his life.
Peter was an avid golfer who enjoyed countless days on the course with family and friends. He loved fishing, spending time on a boat, and being out on the water whenever he had the opportunity. Throughout his life, he was a talented hockey player and baseball player, and he took great pride in coaching Nathan's hockey teams, sharing his love of the game and creating memories that would last a lifetime. A lifelong Toronto Maple Leafs fan, Peter rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his team.
While Peter enjoyed many hobbies, nothing brought him greater happiness than his family. He was immensely proud of his children and the lives they built. The happiest day of his life was becoming a grandfather. Lucas, Leon, Theo, and Daphne brought him immeasurable joy, and he cherished every moment spent with them. Whether sharing stories, celebrating milestones, or simply being together, his family was always his greatest source of pride.
Peter will be remembered for his love of family, his enjoyment of the outdoors, his passion for golf and hockey, and the pride he took in his children and grandchildren. His memory will live on in the stories shared around family tables, on golf courses, at hockey rinks, and on quiet days spent by the water.
He will be deeply missed, lovingly remembered, and forever held in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
A Graveside Service for family, extended family, and close friends will be held on Monday, June 8, 2026, at Mount Hamilton Cemetery.
