Ratha Duong

1974 – 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ratha Duong, age 52, who left us peacefully surrounded by his family.

Ratha was born in Kandal, Kampuchea. As a young child, he and his family endured the hardships of the Cambodian genocide and later spent time in a refugee camp in Thailand. In 1987, at the age of 13, Ratha came to Canada, where he would go on to build a life rooted in family, friendship, generosity and community. He spent much of his life in Stoney Creek and Hamilton, a community in which he became known and loved by so many.

To know Ratha was to know his generosity. He was the kind of person who would truly give you the shirt off his back. He lent a helping hand without hesitation, gave freely and often offered what he had before anyone even had the chance to ask. His kindness was simply part of who he was.

Ratha was laid-back, warm and always ready with a joke. He loved to playfully tease the people around him and had a sense of humour that made people feel comfortable in his presence.

More than anything, Ratha loved being around people. He treasured time spent with his family and friends and had a special place in his heart for children. He loved fishing, whether surrounded by friends and family or simply enjoying the peace that came with being by the water.

Ratha had a remarkable way of knowing everyone—and everyone seemed to know Ratha. His friendships reached across generations, from children to parents and grandparents. He became a familiar and beloved presence within his community, leaving an impression on countless people throughout his life.

Above all, Ratha loved his family. He leaves behind his two children, his brother and three sisters, along with extended family, dear friends and a community of people whose lives were touched by his kindness.

Ratha is now reunited with his beloved mother, Phan Mao, who passed before him in May 2022.

His generosity, humour and easygoing spirit will not be forgotten. They will live on in the stories shared about him, in the laughter he brought to those around him, and in the many people who experienced his kindness.

Ratha will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
