After celebrating his 72nd birthday with his beloved family, Richard (Rick) passed peacefully in his home. Rick is survived by his son Timothy (Stephanie), granddaughter Sloane, and mother (Aniela), predeceased by his father, Walter. Older brother to Barbara (Michael), Raymond (Mary), and Peter (Jane). Beloved by his large extended family. Rick will also be missed by his loyal companion dog, Django.
Rick was born in Welland, Ontario, and later grew up on the West Mountain in Hamilton. Growing up, Rick left home at the age of 16 to hitchhike across Canada, with the goal of reaching Australia. Rick made it as far as Hawaii. He spent years living on the beach, which he often called the best years of his life. During this time, Rick fell in love with the counterculture movement of the 1960s and the psychedelic rock music of the era, which continued to be a mainstay in his life.
After Hawaii, Rick returned to Canada and settled in British Columbia. During those years, Rick built an incredible collection of vinyl records and 45s that were well loved and listened to.
In the early 1980s, Rick returned to Hamilton to work in the family business as an electrician, taking over Walter Lopinski Electric from his father, along with his cousin Dave (Brenda), who he continued to work with until his passing.
Rick was a talented guitar player and loved jamming with his friends in their band, Sharx.
Rick was a loving and devoted father to Tim. All while running his electrical contracting business, Rick selflessly volunteered his time as an involved Dad in his church, community and Tim’s school. Whether shuttling Tim to 6 am hockey practices, taking camping and fishing trips, vacations to Florida, countless concerts and adventures across the continent, the time spent together was priceless.
On his final day, Rick celebrated his birthday watching and listening to the music of the Grateful Dead performed by the group’s drummer, Bill Kreutzmann, in his backyard on the shores of Kauai, Hawaii.
Cremation has taken place. A reception to honour, celebrate and remember Rick's life will be held in early 2025. In lieu of flowers, a donation to a preferred charity in Rick’s honour will be appreciated.
