With profound sadness, the family of Romana Novak announces her peaceful passing on February 27, 2026 at the Algonquin Nursing Home in Mattawa, ON, surrounded by her family. We lost a beautiful woman, but heaven gained a beautiful angel.
Romana leaves behind her daughter, Simona Peterson and her son, Frank Novak. Predeceased by her husband, Frank Novak Sr; her son-in-law, Rick Peterson; her parents, Janez and Cecilija Globocnik; her sisters Dora and Pepca; and nephews Draza and Paul. She will be fondly remembered by her sisters-in-law, Slavka Pavlovich (late Dusan) and her family; Josephine Novak (late Paul) and her family; Vera Vovk (late Franci) and her family; Jozica Zupan and her family; and Linda Novak. She leaves behind family, including nieces, nephews and friends mourning her loss, both in Canada and Slovenia. Family meant the world to Romana. She was blessed with many grandchildren that she loved and that loved her so much: Adam (Lori), Dylan (Tammy), Serena (Shawn) and Jared (Carley), Erica (Brek), Simona and Frank. She was also very blessed with many great grandchildren that loved her and will miss her immensely: Ryleigh, Blake, Aubree, Jaxon, Quentin, Bronson, Kipton, Emerson, Ivey and Olivia.
Romana bravely left Slovenia with their two young children to reunite with her husband, who had previously immigrated to Canada. They lived in St. Thomas, Elliot Lake and finally settled in Hamilton, ON. She enjoyed travelling throughout Canada; to Slovenia numerous times and to tropical destinations. She was an avid gardener, seamstress, skier, hiker and, above all, an excellent cook and baker. Her Slovenian culinary skills for both meals and baking were exceptional. We enjoyed her meals, especially her healing and delicious soup. She loved cooking and baking for us; her famous line was “you got to eat” no matter how stuffed we were! She was a member of St. Gregory the Great Parish in Hamilton, ON, and went on many church trips offered, to Slovenian picnics and dances throughout her attendance until her battle with dementia brought her up to Mattawa, ON to be near her daughter and her family. Her care at Algonquin Nursing Home was beyond outstanding. All the staff treated her with kindness, respect and dignity and they loved talking and joking with her. She was a staff favorite. Her family is eternally grateful for her exemplary care.
The family will be receiving visitors at Markey-Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street East, Hamilton, ON on Wednesday, March 18, 2026 from 4 pm to 7 pm. Prayers will be held promptly at 4:00pm with visitation following. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Gregory the Great Parish, Hamilton, on Thursday, March 19, 2026 at 10:00 am, following which she will be laid to rest at Our Lady of Angels Mausoleum at 681 Mud St. East in Stoney Creek. If desired donations to the Alzheimer Society of Canada would be gratefully acknowledged by her family or a charity of your choice in her honour.
