I don’t know why I took a picture of my father’s old Italian passport the day he showed it to me just over a year ago. Maybe I knew I’d need something solid when everything else slipped away. He was nineteen,  when that photo was takin Porto Empedocle, Sicily — a town that  I remember when I visited it that smelled of salt, ripe lemons, and the sea.

He left with a suitcase and belief. Married my mother by proxy — he in Canada, she still in Sicily — because she was only 15 years old, too young to join him. She came a year later, . They married again for real on April 7th 1956. I was born over a year 

I remember when my uncle Pasquale died. My dad, Salvatore, stood at one end of the casket, my uncle Giuseppe at the other, as it was lowered, saying their final goodbyes.  I grabbed my uncle’s hand, said, “Ahora fate pace” — now make peace. They hugged, sobbing, and became best friends again, hunting rabbits and ducks together:Ten years of grudges forgotten.

Looking at his passport more carefully, I see my grandfather’s name beneath his as— Gaetano — my name, too. I thought of quote of Kahlil Gibran: "Parents are bows, children the arrows". My nonno was the bow that launched us.

I was born, the oldest of five, with siblings who carry the same vengeful stubbornness.  I don’t know why we Sicilians are dramatic, hold grudges, and seek revenge — maybe the island, isolated, shaping character like Lord of the Flies. 

A day before he died, I tried to bring him pieces of home — cannoli and pistachios. The bakery was closed. “Fastuci,” I said in Sicilian. He looked at them and said nothing. When I think of my dad now I think of the scene from t The Godfather: Clemenza leaving for a grave task, and his wife calls out, “Don’t forget the cannoli!”                                   Sorry, Dad, I forgot the cannoli.
I hope our memory  carries the sweetness of home. and perhaps the old stubborn grudges,  finally dissolve as he returns home

Thank you for beautiful memories of my beautiful family from the age 1 to 24 years old. I have beautiful memories of my loving family,  always caring, always laughing, and aways in the Cucina. The memories give me strength in this ugly world, now the world has changed for the worse. In la vita, I remember my Nonno as a family man, a man of kindness.  In la vita I get happy thinking of all the good people I've met along the way. Nonno, I am sorry I could not enjoy your company the last 25 years, but life changes. People have turned sour, bitter, unhappy. 
La vita now has changed. Rest in peace Nonno Salvatore Giglione.
