Sonia Semcesen

Beloved wife of Ronan. Precious daughter of Janko and Nadia. Survived by so many heartbroken family and friends. To know Sonia was to love her. Her infectious laugh and beaming smile lit up the hearts of everyone around her. Sonia was an adventurous soul who travelled the world, making many friends along the way.

Sonia found her true calling as a registered nurse where she was loved and respected by all who worked with her in Toronto, Darwin (Australia), and finally back home in Hamilton. For the past 10+ years, she worked as a critical care nurse at The Hamilton General Hospital. Sonia was a highly skilled RN who was a mentor and friend to all of her ICU colleagues. Her compassionate nature helped many patients and families through their most difficult times.

Sonia loved to be active and was always up for trying something new. A proud Hamiltonian, Sonia was a huge TiCats fan and could be found at many events around the city that she loved.

Sonia was deeply proud of her Ukrainian heritage, which remained an important part of her identity throughout her life. She spent many years dancing with Chaika, where she built lasting friendships and expressed her love of Ukrainian culture. Sonia was also a long-time member of the Ukrainian Youth Association of Hamilton, a community that shaped her values and remained close to her heart.

Visitation at Markey Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street East, Hamilton, on Wednesday, January 14 from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. with Panachyda at 6 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Church, 15 St Olga Street, Hamilton on Thursday, January 15 at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at St. Volodymyr Ukrainian Cemetery, Oakville.
