Mrs. Sophia Jane Smith

It is with great sadness that we announce that Jane passed away peacefully at Macassa Lodge in her 99th year on July 18, 2011. Predeceased by her beloved husband Norman. Jane is survived by her daughter Diana, son-in-law Jim and grandchildren Warren and Laura, her cousin Minnie in England, Betty sister-in-law in England, sister-on-law Isabel in Scotland and will be missed by her long time friend Warren Moore. Jane immigrated from Scotland at age 17 and being confident, self assured, independent, and strong willed she entered public service to earn a living. She excelled in her chosen career and proved to be an excellent cook, housekeeper and successful seamstress making many of her own clothes besides working in retail selling at Northways Department Store. Later in life Jane devoted many years as an active volunteer with the YWCA and as a member of the Senior Club enjoyed social nights, loved dancing and travelling. The family would like to thank all the nurses and staff at Macassa Lodge for their sincere care and compassion for Jane. Special thanks to Lena, Rocci, Barbara, Bennie, Mike, Dennis, Wally, Mary, Jack, Rose and other neighbours who assisted Jane in many ways over the years. Family will receive friends at the CRESMOUNT FUNERAL HOME (322 Fennell Avenue East, Hamilton) on Thursday from 3-6 p.m. Funeral Service to take place on Friday, July 22, 2011 at 11 a.m. in the chapel. In lieu of flowers donations to the SPCA will be appreciated.
