Toma Umolac

Loving father of Vilko (Margaret). Cherished grandfather of Catherine (Chris). Toma, also known as Tom, is survived by his dear sisters Danica (Mlinac) of Croatia and Mary Matesic of Hamilton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews in

Canada, Croatia and Switzerland. He was predeceased by his parents, Franjo and Kata Umolac; by seven brothers Vjekoslav, Mato, Janko, Stephan, Joseph, Nikola, Ferdo and by his sister Anka (Mateca). Born in Umole, Croatia, Toma met the love of his life at a wedding celebration in a nearby village and they remained a steadfast caring team. After working in Austria, he emigrated to Canada in 1960 following a 15-day journey by ship, the Seven Seas, from Germany. He was later joined here by his young family. He enjoyed hobby farming and worked at Dofasco for approximately 30 years before retirement. An avid gardener, Toma enjoyed cooking from scratch with the vegetables he grew, making wine with his home-grown grapes, knitting socks to withstand 30 below temperatures and delighting family and friends with his hair-raising and comical story-telling.

Visitation at the Markey-Dermody Funeral Home, 1774 King Street East (at Kenilworth) on Friday from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Vigil Prayers at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Holy Cross Croatian Catholic Church, 1883 King Street East, Hamilton on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery,
