Velma lived her entire life in Hamilton, Ontario. Daughter of Art and Bertie Owen, she was the last remaining of four siblings. Velma shared almost 55 years of marriage with Jack until his passing in 2005. She was the devoted mother of Pat (Dan), John - 2025 (Marilyn), Thom (Martha), Don 2016 (Colleen), Patrick 1961 and Ellen (Swavic 2021). Velma was a proud grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother who treasured every opportunity to gather with family and celebrate life's milestones.
A dedicated, resilient, hardworking woman, both at home and in the community. Her final and longest role was as Superintendent of a small Apartment complex in West Hamilton retiring at the age of 87. Known for her beautiful penmanship, Velma was also a remarkably modern grandmother. Curious and eager to learn, she embraced computers when they first became popular, became an online seller of vinyl records long before retro collecting became fashionable. A talented crafter, Velma also loved reading, challenging games of Scrabble, and tackling 1,000-piece jigsaw puzzles. Her specialty was making delicious pies using a treasured recipe passed down from her grandmother.
Her communities at Church, a Seniors Lunch Program and her neighbours in East Hamilton, have provided a wonderful social network for Velma and she built lasting friendships with people of all ages. Her generosity touched many lives. She knitted hats, scarves, and mittens for youth groups, created lap blankets for nursing home residents, and crafted beautiful handmade greeting cards using her quilling skills. Her mind remained bright, curious, and engaged almost until the very end. Velma loved life deeply and was never quite ready to leave it. She always felt there was still more to learn, more to experience, and more people to meet.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, particularly 6 ALC and 8 CCC, Dr. Mullah, and the Palliative Care Team, for the compassionate care and kindness given to Velma and our family. In lieu of flowers, donations in Velma's memory may be made to St. George's Anglican Church; or The Welcome Inn Community Centre.
