Ms. Alice Evelyn Fogg Davis-Dickens was born on May 8, 1932 to the late Joe Fogg and Isabella Harris Fogg in Franklin County, NC. She slept away in the arms of the Lord and gained her crown on May 1, 2026.
At a young age, she accepted Christ as her Saviour and joined the Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Louisburg, NC, the church organized by her ancestors. She maintained great love for Walnut Grove throughout her life and always looked forward to going back for Homecoming each year.
Alice was educated at the Franklin County Training School, Louisburg, NC and afterwards married the late Weldon Lewis Davis. To this union nine children were born.
She was known as “Mama” to many. It takes a village to raise a child. Mama was the leading lady in the village, the Proverbs 31 woman as evidenced by her children. Each of them graduated high school and some went to college. She provided a loving home to her children and their friends. She extended that same love to her friends and neighbors. Whether it was feeding, giving money, buying groceries, offering a ride, or whatever the need, she was there! I am sure you have your own “Alice” story to share concerning her witness. Alice never lost her down south hospitality. She loved Marvin Gaye and was a diehard Dallas Cowboys fan. Her house was adorned with Cowboy memorabilia. Go Cowboys!
Sis. Dickens was a member of the Messiah Baptist Church, Newport News, VA. She served on the Trustee Board, the Usher Board, was very active with the Tidewater Usher Conference, and sang with the Senior and Mass Choirs.
Alice retired from Bendix (Siemens Automotive) after 25 years of service. In 2024, Alice received the Newport News Life-long Citizenship Award and was honored with a plaque and a bouquet of flowers. She taught her children and loved ones to give her flowers while she could see them and smell them. They did!
Alice’s siblings preceded her in death. They were John, Emerson, and Ed Fogg, Ida Wright, Louise Clanton, Elise Long, Lossie Webb, Virginia Brinkley, Sonny and Inetta Leonard, and Earnest Spivey. Alice was preceded in death by (3) children: Lonnie, Douglas, and James (Bird) Davis. She also was preceded in death by her spiritual brother, and former pastor, Rev. Milton A. Byrd, Sr.
Alice’s transition is a great loss to her children and their children, and she leaves a tremendous void in the family as she closes out a generation. She leaves to cherish wonderful memories, (2) sons – Charles Davis of the home and Larry (Shirley) Davis; (4) daughters – Mary Chandler. Connie (Richard) Johnson, Patricia and Diane Davis all of Hampton, VA as well as a grandson of the home, Ray Davis; grandchildren: Pam (Sean) Stubbs, Ra’Mon Davis, Makela Davis (Jazzmine Walters), Tasha (Carlos) Wells, Omar (Nashe’ High) Nuriddin, Ahmad (Netta) Nuriddin, James (Christal) Davis, Cassandra Blythe, Jornou, Shavelle and Jezreel (Nikkva) Davis, Tameka and Michael “Doozie” McIntyre; (40) great-grandchildren, (8) great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and family; Sons by another mother: Henry “Lil Ray” Smith, Murad Nuriddin, Reid Williams, and Terry Newby. And friends will cherish precious memories of Alice.
Ride or die friends include Genever “Dottie” Brown, Marie Belches, Maxine Long Yarborough, Betty Wynder Fitzgerald, Myrtle Jones and Elnora Marshall; and Deacons Robert Isom, David Farmer, and Trustee Bill Jones. Family, neighbors, saints, and friends have a gaping void and will forever cherish the precious memories of Sis, Alice E. Dickens.
The family will receive friends for a visitation that will be held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia 23666, on Thursday, May 14, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
