Bernice V. Matthews

Bernice Virginia Austin Matthews, age 82, passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2010. She was a native of Hampton and a lifelong resident of the Peninsula. Bernice was employed with Montgomery Ward and retired after 13 years of service. She was a charter member of Wythe Presbyterian Church and served as its secretary, Sunday School teacher, and choir member.

Bernice is preceded in death by her parents and a sister. She is survived by her husband, Frederick R. Matthews; son, Matt Matthews; daughters, Cheryl Howell and husband, Ray, Meg Holloman and husband, Michael, and Kathy Holloman and husband, Howard; her sister, Frances Wolf, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Thursday, September 9, 2010 from 6 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. A celebration of Bernice's life will be held Friday, September 10 at 2:30 PM at Wythe Presbyterian Church, with Reverend David Van Dyke officiating. Interment will be private.
