

She was born November 9, 1909 on Tangier Island and lived there until her family moved to Hampton when she was a child. She later lived in Norfolk and was a member of Willowwood Presbyterian Church for many years. She was also a volunteer in the "I Can't Help It Club" for the mentally challenged.
Bernice was always a kind, loving person who loved the beach, was a wonderful cook, and loved spending time with her family.
Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Bernard; son, Burke Deiter of Maryland; daughter, Gwendolyn Smith of Norfolk; brothers, Pat Murphy and Joe Murphy; sister, Virginia Scott; and a niece, Betty Yarrington, all of Hampton.
She is survived by her son, James Smith of Richmond; grandson, Hal Deiter of Lake Tahoe, NV; daughter-in-law, Jane Deiter of Maryland; nieces, JoAnn Miller, Peggy Scott, and Jane Parker; and nephew, Bill Murphy, all of Hampton.
A graveside service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Norfolk on Monday, August 23 at 11:00 A.M.
