Carol was born in Newark, New Jersey, on December 23, 1938. She was named Carol after the phrase ‘Christmas Carol’ because of the close proximity of her birthday to Christmas.
She lived in East Orange, New Jersey until she was married in 1960 to her first husband, Robert Dely, who was a pilot and an officer in the Air Force. Carol and Robert peaceably divorced in 1981, and Carol remarried in 2006 to Philip Oswald, who was a retired Lt. Colonel in the Army.
Carol was an avid reader and read several novels a week. She also was a lifelong fan of Jeopardy, even auditioning for the show when she was in her twenties. She traveled extensively as an Air Force wife, including a coast-to-coast road trip with her husband and children in the 60’s and she also lived overseas for four years in Tachikawa, Japan. Carol was also a skilled bridge player, which is how she met her second husband, Phil.
Carol loved animals, especially dogs, and she had many dogs and granddogs who adored her. She loved to walk her dog daily at Gosnold Hope Park before health issues prevented her from doing so. Carol also enthusiastically supported her equestrian daughters and loved their horses as her ‘grandbabies’.
Carol was a member of First United Methodist Church of Fox Hill. She loved hearing the traditional hymns of her childhood, and she enjoyed attending and participating in church events. She also loved to watch her daughter play the bells in the church choir and to see her acolyte granddaughter light the candles before services began. Her favorite Bible story was ‘The Prodigal Son’, where she often amused us by making up her own endings to the story.
Carol is survived by her daughter, Adrienne Soule’; granddaughters Jessica Hodges and Mikayla Behlmar; and two brothers, John Brown (Ronnie) and Bruce Brown (Jamila). She was predeceased by her mother and father, Gertrude and Arthur Brown, her husband, Philip Oswald, and her daughter Diana Behlmar (Mike).
