Darryl P. LaBrie passed away at his home on Friday, 15 July 2011. He was born in Jericho, Vermont on October 12, 1963, son of the late Charlie and Nellie (Kinney) LaBrie. He is survived by his beloved and devoted wife, Laura; his daughter, Sarah and her children Isaiah and Shakia; his sons, Michael and Thomas; sister, Diane St.Cyr and husband Louie of Jericho; brother, Duane and wife Sherry of Fairfield, VT and Sebring FL; and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins. Darryl was also predeceased by his two brothers, David and Dean.
The youngest of 5 siblings, Darryl was an endearing child. A beautiful dark eyed wonder who could talk your ear off and achieve anything he set his mind to. Spending summers at the family camp on Metcalf Pond, he could swim like a fish at age 3. Growing up in Jeffersonville, Darryl attended LUHS where he made lasting friendships and found the love of his life. He and Laura married in 1984 and began their family. The last few years they traveled to many exotic places that are forever captured in Darryl's amazing photography and Laura's writings. Darryl had the gift of seeing beauty all around him in nature and people.
Darryl joined the US Air Force right out of high school, then joined the Vermont Air National Guard where he spent the next 26 years of his 30 years in the military. He spent many years maintaining F-16s, served as an Honor Guardsman, and was most recently the Support Element Supervisor of the 158th Fighter Wing Detachment 1, which is responsible for providing Air Sovereignty Alert and Homeland Defense for Langley AFB, Virginia. Darryl proudly served twice in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. It was evident to all who knew him that he had found his life's calling.
In March of 2010 Darryl entered his greatest battle when diagnosed with a brain tumor. He chose to fight and underwent two brain surgeries. He fought with strength and courage, never losing his sense of humor. He remained his kind and gracious self throughout his fight. Darryl is a hero in every sense of the word and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
