

Dick Massey, age 86, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at his home with his family by his side. He was a native of Johnson County, North Carolina and was a resident of Hampton since 1946. He was a World War II Army veteran and continued serving his country as a civil servant for six years following his discharge. Dick owned and operated Massey’s Grocery and Gulf service station on Big Bethel Road for 29 years. He started Dick’s Farm Equipment in the same location in 1981, which closed in 2002 when the land was purchased as part of Sandy Bottom Nature Park.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Massey and Sally Edwards Massey; and son, Terry Massey. He is survived by his wife, Beatrice B. Massey; son, Gary Massey of Hampton; daughters, Wilma Frank and Peggy Weaver of Clarksville, TN, grandchildren, Sally Garrett, Darrell Adkins, Rachael Massey and Brett Adkins; 7 great grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and sister, Blanch Grice of Goldsboro, NC.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home. A celebration of Dick's life will be held Thursday, February 23, at 11:30 a.m. at Abundant Life Tabernacle, 101 Blackburn Lane, in Hampton, officiated by Rev. Glen Jones. Interment will be private.
