

He was born on June 1, 1945, in Salisbury, Maryland. He was a son of the late Joseph C. Dickerson and the late Geraldine White Dickerson Williams. He was raised in Delmar, Delaware, where he developed an amazing work ethic. After graduating from Delmar High School in 1963, Don attended Goldey-Beacom School of Business until 1965 when he began service in the United States Coast Guard Reserve until 1971. Over his career, Don worked at the DuPont Company, owner of Britt’s Body Shop, J. I. Wells Company, and Kopper’s Company all on the Eastern Shore. In 1994, Don moved to Staunton, Virginia to work for NorPac, Inc. and then Weekes Forest Products up until the time of his passing. At the age of 80, he still had no plans to retire as he loved his work.
Don is survived by his wife of 37 years, Sandra F. Aliff Dickerson, his daughters Marla Dickerson and Ellen Dickerson Schwinn (Mike), his sons Richard Brooks Jr and Todd Hawkins. Don was the proud grandfather to Kelsey Dickerson Tilghman, Wade Dickerson, Rachel Reed, Olivia Hawkins, Seth Hawkins, Josh Schwinn, Emma Dickerson, Lilly Hawkins, and Nathan Schwinn, and one great-grandson, Huxley Tilghman. Don has a twin brother, Ronald Dickerson (Eleanor) and a younger brother, Robert Dickerson (Sandy). He is also survived by several nephews and cousins.
Don was preceded in death by a grandson, Dustin Todd Ellis.
Don attended services at Bon Air Baptist Church and Richmond’s First Baptist Church. He also enjoyed working outside taking care of his yard and watching the Dallas Cowboys and the Baltimore Orioles.
The family would like to thank the fourth floor ICU staff from Bon Secours Hospital for the exceptional care they gave Don during his final days.
The family will receive friends on December 23, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Chapel, located at 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia, 23666. A Celebration of Life Service will follow at 2:00 pm at the same location. Interment with military honors will take place at Parklawn Memorial Park, also located at 2551 North Armistead Ave, Hampton, Virginia, 23666, following the service at 3:00 pm. Services will be officiated by Dr. John Morris.
