

Fred retired from Fort Monroe, VA after a 25 year army career which included tours in Japan, Korea, Berlin, and Viet Nam. After retiring, he went back to school and earned a Masters Degree in Education from Old Dominion University. He taught history and government at Ferguson High School and retired in June 1992 after 10 years of teaching. Fred was an avid golfer and gardener. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife of 59 years, Jackie. They would often stop for a round of golf at courses they saw from the highway.
Fred was preceded in death by his wife Jackie. He is survived by his sons, Rick and wife Linda Herstrom of Providence Forge, VA; Chris and wife Julie Herstrom of Suffolk, VA; grandchildren Rob and wife Lara Herstrom of Seattle, WA; Jennifer and husband Mike Salter of Plano, TX; Chris and wife Jaclyn Herstrom Jr. of Garland, TX; Derick Herstrom of Suffolk, VA; brother Art Herstrom Jr. of Steilacoom, WA; three great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends.
A Celebration of Frederick's Life was held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home on Friday, June 21, 2013 at 2:00 p.m.
