His tours of service took him to locations in the Pacific, Europe, and Africa, as well as multiple stations in the U.S. In retirement he enjoyed time with his family, fishing from his favorite spot on the Ft. Monroe Engineers' pier and bowling with friends and teammates at Century Lanes and Spare Times.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Elfriede; his brother George; his children, Jessie Christman (Mark), Julie Lyman ( Michael) and Allen Whitaker; five grandchildren, Brian, Jason, Georgia, Ben and Kelsey and countless nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at Intrepid Hospice, particularly nurses Helen and Jessica for their compassionate care.
A private graveside service will be held at Hampton Memorial Gardens.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Salvation Army.
