

LCDR Joseph Edward McClanahan, US Navy Retired of Portsmouth, Virginia passed away peacefully on Monday, Dec 15, 2025 at Maryview Bon Secours hospital from heart failure. He was born in Raceland, KY on June 11, 1943 to John W. McClanahan and Annabelle L Shope McClanahan.
Joseph is preceded in death by his parents John and Annabelle. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Sharon Delaney and her husband John and his brother John Paul McClanahan.
Joe is survived by his wife of 35 years, Amy Dianne McKay and his two sons, Kelsey Dean McClanahan and his wife, Kelli, and his son, Brant Allen McClanahan and his two dogs Aiden and Toby. Joseph has 6 grandchildren, Kaylynn, Gavin, Keagan, Megan, Cooper and Cullan. Joseph is also survived by his brother Roger McClanahan and his wife, Celeste and his brother John’s wife, Judy. He is also survived by his sister Johnda McClanahan.
Joseph graduated from Auburn University with a BS Degree in Physics in 1970, He went on to get his MBA at City University, Bellevue, WA in 1979. He also graduated from Naval Post Graduate School with an MS in Mechanical Engineering in 1984. Joseph retired in1988 from the US Navy. He also retired from Lockheed Martin Corporation in 2011.
Joe met his wife Amy while he was stationed in the Strategic Submarine Program Office in Arlington, VA and working to help make Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay the home port for Trident submarines. Joe and Amy shared a love of boating, jet skiing and kayaking. They enjoyed many vacations to various places and especially Florida. They loved going to Key West, FL to see the Kay West Super Boat Races each year.
On Saturday, January 3, 2025, visitation will be at 1:00 pm and his funeral will be at 2 pm with a reception to follow. All services will be held at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, 2551 N. Armistead Ave. Hampton, VA 23666..
