

Dr. Louis A. Herrmann, M.D., 86, passed away on Wednesday, January 21, 2015. He was born on November 15, 1928, the 5th child of the late Rinehart Charles and Rose Cecelia Pauley Herrmann in Pittsburgh, PA.
Dr. Herrmann studied at the University of Pittsburgh from 1946-1950 earning a Bachelor of Science Degree. He entered the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and graduated with a Doctor of Medicine Degree in June of 1954.
Dr. Herrmann was commissioned in the U.S. Navy at the U.S. Naval Hospital in St. Albans, Long Island, NY as an intern,.completing his training in June 1955. He then studied at the U.S. Navy School of Aviation Medicine, completing training as a Flight Surgeon in December of 1955. He was assigned to the Carrier Air Force Group One in Cecil Field, Florida, attached to the carrier U.S.S. Forrestal until June 1958.
Dr. Herrmann completed a Master’s Degree in Public Health from the John Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in June of 1959. From 1959-1961 he continued training at the U.S. Navy School of Aviation Medicine in Pensacola, FL.
In June of 1960, Dr. Herrmann married Doris Irene McLeod at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Pensacola, FL. They spent 54 wonderful years together.
In June of 1961, he was assigned as Senior Medical Officer on the U.S.S. Wasp in Boston, MA. In the spring of 1963, he was stationed as Senior Medical Officer at the U.S. Auxiliary Air Station in New Iberia, LA.
Dr. Herrmann had other career assignments in the Navy: Assistant Medical Officer, Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, FL; Senior Medical Officer on the U.S.S. Forrestal; Wing Medical Officer, 2nd Marine Air Wing, Cherry Point, NC; Senior Medical Officer, Naval Air Station, Norfolk, VA; Senior Medical Officer, Naval Air Station, Lakehurst, NJ.
On October 1, 1976, Dr. Herrmann retired from the U.S. Navy having served 22 years. He then worked for the Kelsey-Seybold Clinic at Langley Research Center in Hampton, VA until his retirement in 1986.
He is survived by his wife, Doris M. Herrmann of Hampton; four children, Teresa Cummings of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Mark Herrmann of Richmond, VA, Dr. Robert Herrmann of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and Michael Herrmann of Yorktown, VA; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a brother, Rev. Robert W. Herrmann of Pittsburgh, PA.
A service celebrating Dr. Herrmann’s life will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, January 26, 2015 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 512 Buckroe Avenue, in Hampton with Father Robert W. Herrmann officiating. Interment with full honors rendered by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard will be held at 3:00 pm, Monday at Peninsula Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made in Dr. Herrmann’s honor in lieu of flowers to a charity of choice.
