

He served in the U.S. Army and retired in 1972 after 29 years. During his career he served in three wars, World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam. He received several citations including the Bronze Star. Because of service in three separate conflicts, he obtained the nickname “3 War Willie”. Following military service he worked at the Langley Air Force Commissary as a bagger from 1975 to 1995.
He was a member of Little Zion Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, sung in the J.W. Dodd Men’s Chorus, participated in the reading program for children and many other church activities.
Proceeding him in rest is his former wife, Leola Willis; son, Luther B. Willis III: and daughter, Barbara J. Willis. Surviving members of his family include his daughters, Beverly Ragsdale, Brenda Kirkland and husband Anthony; grandchildren, Kristle, Karena, Amaris, Tamie, Larry, Rachelle, Juanita, and Wayne; and great grandchildren, particularly Christopher who assisted with his grandfather’s care; close and devoted friends Clarence Wright and Lenora Wise.
The family will receive friends Friday, Feb. 25, 2011 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Little Zion Baptist Church, 1824 W. Queen Street, Hampton VA 23666. A service celebrating his life will be held Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at the church.
