

He was born on August 28, 1949, in Princess Anne County in Virginia Beach to the late Ernest and Zelma Sawyer. He served in the Air Force as a member of the Honor Guard and was responsible for machinery that serviced the air planes, was a member of the Poquoson Masonic Lodge 49, and contractor/owner of Sawyer’s Siding, Window, and Gutter Company before his retirement in June 2013. He loved his family and loved to visit with family and friends, to fish and go camping with his wife.
He is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Josephine “Jo” Sawyer; three sons, Kenneth “Jake” Thomas of Gloucester VA, Lil Mark Sawyer and wife Tammy of Corinth, TX, and Marshall Sawyer and wife Cassie of Poquoson VA; four grandchildren, Trey (wife Ginger Kuykendall) Michelle (husband Eric Kennedy), Haylie (husband Chris Edwards) and Elizabeth; 3 great-grandchildren Liam, Halle and Carson and many other family members and friends. He was the middle child of 11 siblings: six brothers Carl, Paul (wife Ruth Ann), Jesse, Kelly (wife Fran), Kenneth (wife Hae Sun), and Howard (wife Jane) and four sisters Merle, Pearl, Clara Ruth and Carolyn (husband Tommy).
The family would like to thank the Poquoson Emergency Medical Ambulances responders and the medical team at Riverside’s Surgical Intensive Care Unit who gave him such outstanding care.
His burial will be handled by the Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home and private service will be held, Saturday, March 5, 2022 at 11:00 a.m., for family only. There will be a Celebration of Life following the funeral at the family home.
