Merle was born April 7, 1935 to Floyd Jay and Mary Helen (Condon) Arnold in Ames, Iowa. He graduated from Ames High School and attended Iowa State University where he earned degrees in Business and Psychology. His college education took longer to complete than usual, as he enlisted in the Army in 1952, and he used the GI Bill to complete his education.
Merle served in Korea as a sniper and in Vietnam as a helicopter pilot. He proudly served his country for over 25 years and retired with the rank of Major and many decorations for his service, including three Purple Hearts. Merle never fully retired from the military, and he continued as a test pilot and a military consultant for many years.
He met Nancy Colton, and they married November 28, 1958. Nancy was a school teacher and traveled around the world wherever Merle was stationed. They lived in 25 different homes before settling in Newport News. Many of their stays included Germany, Japan, Korea, Thailand, United State and Vietnam.
In retirement, Merle stayed active in the Disabled American Veterans Organization, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Retired Officers Association. He also was very involved in the Lion’s Club and held district and state offices. He became acquainted with Hugh O’Brian during his military career and he helped promote the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership program in the state of Virginia. Merle enjoyed fine jewelry and became a certified gemology appraiser later in life.
Left to cherish his memory are his special caregiver, Nancy Pittman; sister, Elizabeth Graham (Arnold); a nephew; and three nieces.
Merle was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy; parents, Floyd and Mary; sister, Mary Jane Huntington (Arnold); one niece; and two brothers-in-law.
Merle will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
