Mildred Leilani Smith-Owen passed away peacefully at home on June 26, 2021 surrounded in love. Millie/Pinkie/Ting-Ting was born on January 5, 1951 in Honolulu, HI to Walter and Esther Smith, who were both Pearl Harbor survivors.
She is preceded in death by her husband, James A. Owen II and her son, James A. Owen III.
She is survived by her daughter Kelly J. Krieg; son-in-law, Timothy A. Krieg; her only grandchildren, Andrew J. Krieg II and Isabelle E. Krieg; as well as all the lives she touched.
Mildred was married to James “Buck” for 48 years. She was an UPstanding and OUTstanding Navy wife for 27 years. Accounting and numbers were her passion and she had a volunteer heart. She volunteered for the Red Cross, was the president of the P.T.A., and cared for many elderly friends and family throughout her years. She also loved sewing, knitting, crafting, and crocheting.
She enjoyed and supported numerous hobbies and activities with “Buck” throughout their life together; from riding Harley-Davidson motorcycles together, rebuilding engines, restoring hot rods, Civil War re-enacting, or the Ladies Auxiliary. Whether she was twisting a throttle, torqueing a bolt, sanding body panels, sewing uniforms and dresses, or supporting the American Legion she always put her all into everything she did.
During their time in Appomattox, VA, she assisted as part of the 18th Virginia, Company H, Longstreets Corp. and was a member of the American Legion Post 104. As a young woman, she was a member of the Jobs Daughters, as her parents were part of the Masons.
She had a fierce belief system that respected ALL forms of beliefs and spanned many cultures such as: Native American, Christianity, Spiritual Awareness, and she was a member of the Church of Christ. However, LOVE was her religion.
Mildred was the founding member of the Rosebud Society. Her final act of selfless service came when a dear, young friend helped her to “RELEARN” the art of crocheting after her stroke. She crocheted a beautiful baby blanket for an unborn child getting ready to enter this world.
She left us all with so many memories, as well as gifts only our hearts know.
What a Diamond she was on this earth.
Remember to look for her symbol: The dragonfly.
ALL OF OUR LOVE
