Obituary of Richard Leroy Coughenour
Life on Brightwood Avenue will never be the same. Richard “Pop” Coughenour, a long time resident of Hampton, died unexpectedly on August 2, 2018 at the age of 78. Richard is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sara; his children: Rick Coughenour of Yorktown (Lisa), Sue Martinez of Hampton (Mike) and Anita Coughenour of Hampton; six grandchildren, Sara Morgan (Andy), Justin Martinez, Brandon Mumford, Blakely Coughenour, Logan Coughenour and Mandi Mumford; and one great-grandson, Clay Morgan. He is also survived by much loved family in Pennsylvania, including his brother, Gerald Coughenour; his sister, Evelyn Thompson; his sister-in-law, Jane Boring; and numerous nieces and nephews. His constant companion, Cassie, will miss his familiar spot on Richard’s shoulder. Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Verda Coughenour; his brothers, Robert, Bud and Bill Coughenour; his sisters, Florence McLaughlin, Blanche Richey and Betty Yoder; his mother and father-in-law, Marian and Carl Blough; and brothers-in-law, Sam Boring, Harry McLaughlin, and Glenn Thompson; and sister-in-law, Louise Coughenour. Richard worked for Amory’s Seafood for over 55 years, kicking ass and taking names. Outside of work, Richard loved to spend Friday nights cheering on his Hampton Crabbers. Each weekend, he enjoyed taking Clay on “vroom vroom” rides on the golf cart. Co-workers and friends alike enjoyed the fruits and vegetables that he grew in his many gardens. Richard always had a mischievous grin on his face, constantly plotting his next joke, but would never hesitate to help out a friend or neighbor. Each November, he carefully planned and decorated his yard with Christmas decorations, lighting up the neighborhood – some say the lights could be seen from the end of the street, while others are certain that the lights could be seen from space. Richard’s favorite escape was Walt Disney World; he could ride “It’s A Small Word” all day, and he loved to spend his time with Mickey and Minnie. The family will receive friends at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home on Monday, August 6, 2018 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, August 7 at Hampton Baptist Church, with a graveside service to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Hampton Baptist Church Building Fund, 40 Kings Way, Hampton, Virginia 23669, or Youth Challenge of Hampton Roads, 332 34th Street, Newport News, Virginia 23607.
