passing from this life in Hampton, Virginia on July 7, 2021.
Bob was born to Lena Eva and Lawrence Edgar Rule on August 25, 1934 in Plattsburgh,
New York. He attended Port Henry High School, where, as a natural athlete, (and a fierce
competitor), he excelled at multiple sports - basketball, baseball and football. Later he took up
golf and took to the game with ease.
Bob joined the United States Air Force in 1953 and served two tours in Viet Nam. He
loved planes and flying and was intensely devoted to ensuring that the aircraft in his charge
were in the best shape possible for the pilots that flew them. While in the Air Force, Bob
also competed on the USAF travelling softball team and the USAF bowling team.
After retiring from the Air Force in 1973, his career took him to NASA Langley in
Virginia, where he continued to ply his trade as an aircraft crew chief. One of his biggest
thrills was when he was able to take the controls in his T-34 trainer during a shakedown
flight. He retired in 2004.
Even though Bob lived in the South most of his life, he cherished his “Yankee”
heritage. It was humorous to hear him mix Northern and Southern phrases when in
conversation with him. All of his favorite sports teams were New York based, and during
football season he was a fan of whichever team was winning - especially against
Washington.
Bob loved to laugh and honestly never met a stranger. He would always be available
to offer help to anyone in need. He served as Usher at Restoration Church in Hampton, as
well as providing mentoring to AWANA youth groups. He also coached many youth league
baseball and basketball teams, and was always patient and helpful to the children under his
guidance.
Bob also loved family and was dedicated to providing and making life better for them.
He was a giving and kind person who will greatly be missed, and our lives were enriched by
knowing him.
