

In 1952, she married the late Henry P. Updike. She spent the next 14 years being an Army wife traveling to Oklahoma, France, and New Jersey. In 1966, they moved to Newport News. Her life was devoted to taking care of her husband and children. When Cracker Barrel opened in Newport News, she decided to go to work. She loved working in the shop. During her employment she developed many friendships.
In addition to her parents and husband, Sadie was preceded in death by two brothers, Alderman and Clinton Houchens. She is survived by sons, Henry Updike and wife, Sandra, and Douglas Updike and wife, Kitty; daughter, Shari Mahoney and husband, Brian; grandchildren, H.P. Updike and wife, Jessica, Ryan Updike and wife, Mary, Tim Green, Kelly Ray and husband, Ben, Mitchell Mahoney, Corey Mahoney; great-grandchildren, Elijah Updike, Eva Updike, Landon Updike, Henry Updike, Eleanor Updike, Courtney Ray and Benjamin Ray; two sisters, Dorothy Davis and husband, Shirley, and Patsy DeVivi; brother, Raymond Houchens and his wife, Iris; numerous other family members.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Friday, October 16, 2015 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home followed by a celebration of Sadie’s life at 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Inurnment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
