
Story Wilfred Smith Jr. was the youngest son to the late S. Wilfred Smith and Sara (Row) Smith of New Hope, Bucks County, PA. He was born on the family farm, (homestead), on the 30th of March, 1931. He was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Jean Stulting of Waelder, TX, brother, Horace T. Smith, and sister, Anna R. Duckworth.
Story is survived by his children, Cathy Lynn and her husband, Donald Conger of Panama City, FL, Tamara Ann, and Robert L. Miller of Hampton. Also, grandchildren and great grandchildren through marriage.
Story attended a one, (1), room elementary school near the farm, Solebury Junior High in New Hope and after moving from the farm, Council Rock High School in Newtown, PA. He worked for a while in Philadelphia prior to joining the Airforce in December of 1950, retiring in March 1978 as a MSgt. After having been assigned to Texas where he met and married his wife Emma Jean Stulting, the mother of his children. The family accompanied him on various assignments to Germany, Hawaii, Virginia, and finally, Turkey. He was able to earn his Bachelor's Degree in Business Management through the University of Maryland after attending evening classes in Germany, Texas, and Turkey. MSgt Smith worked in various levels of the Supply/Logistics career field from Command Headquarters, (USAF Security Service) down to a detachment level organization. He travelled to several locations in both Europe and the far east to inspect and verify equipment requirements at subordinate units. MSgt Smith was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his accomplishments while stationed in Turkey. After retiring at Langley AFB, he worked as a computer programmer on contracts for the Navy and for a short time with a contractor at the NASA Langley Research Center. He also worked for H&R Block part time for six seasons.
Story was a member of the Non-Commissioned Association, Masonic Lodge #570 in San Angelo, Texas, and Newport News Scottish Rite Temple. He was also an appointed member and very active on the hampton mayor's committee for people with disabilities for over twenty years, having served times as its chairman and treasurer.
Traveling was a way of life for the Smith family. They drove all over the US and Europe during his assignments. After retirement, this habit continued with cruises to Alaska, automobile trips across the US, cruises around in the Caribbean, through the Panama Canal, Mediterranean, and vacation in Honolulu.
