

William was a machinist at the Newport News Shipbuilding & Drydock and retired after 10 years of service. He served in the U.S. Navy from November 1944 to 1945 and retired from the U.S. Army as a Chief Warrant Officer. He served during WWII, and the Koran and Vietnam Wars. He was a member of the American Legion Post 31, the VFW Post of Phoebus #3219, and the Korean War Veterans Association #191. William was a member of the East Hampton Neighborhood Association and Memorial Baptist Church.
William was preceded in death his brother, Douglas C. Tatum, his parents, John and Daisy Tatum, 4 brothers and 2 sisters. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn Ford Tatum; step-daughter, Linda Young Thompson and husband Tom of Carrollton; 4 step-grandchildren; 5 step-great-grandchildren; brother; and sister, Daisy Mae Carson of Rocky Mount, NC.
The family will receive friends from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 3, 2011 at Parklawn-Wood Funeral Home, with a celebration of William's life to begin at 2:30 p.m. Interment, with military honors, will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
